*Welcome to our school family! I am so excited to meet all of you and start the year! My name is Heather Lewis and I have been with he district for 24 years teaching Early Childhood Education! I am a former Western Michigan Bronco and graduated with degrees in Elementary Education, as well as an additional Early Childhood Degree. After graduating, I earned my Masters Degree through Marygrove College.
Not only is Brighton the place I call home, but I am also a Brighton High School graduate! Go Bulldogs! I have a beautiful daughter, Mallory, who attends BHS and a fluffy white pup named Oreo at home. Our family loves kayaking, swimming, going up north, and cooking! Throughout the year, you will hear me retell and write stories about our adventures. I am excited to begin our journey and learn about your families throughout the year!

We are always in need and welcome volunteers in the classroom! Throughout the year we will have opportunities for you to spend additional time with your child and support our school system. Opportunities may include holiday parties, mystery readers, Friday folders, and much more.

Homework in First Grade!
Your child will have Reading, Cr Success, and Math homework per week. For every 20 minutes read per day, students will earn a marble that will be added to our classroom marble jar. Once the marble jar is filled, we will have a celebration! Math and CR Success homework should be enjoyable and should last approximately 10 minutes a night. This homework does not need to be turned in.

Birthdays in First Grade!
Who doesn't love birthday celebrations!? We would love to celebrate your child and their special day in the classroom with a special poster, in order to learn more about them! Should your child have a summer birthday, we will celebrate in May!

Parent/Teacher Communication!
Every Friday I will send home a newsletter that will inform you of our weekly curriculum, specials, and any upcoming events. Please feel free to email, call, or send a note with any questions or concerns that you many have! I will be sure to get back with you with in 24 hours or at the start of our school week on Monday morning.

Transportation!
Pick up, Busser, or Walker? Clarity of transportation is very important. If at any time you should have to change your child's daily regular means of transportation, please be sure to send a note AND call the office. Teachers may not have an opportunity to check their email throughout the day or may have a guest teacher. In order to keep our kiddos safe, please be sure to notify the school, the teacher, and your child of any changes! Thank you for your cooperation!

These areas include, but are not limited to CR Success Phonetics, Lucy Calkins Reader's and Writer's Workshop, Everyday Math, Handwriting Without Tears, Lexia Core 5, Wordsmith Spelling, as well as Friendship Friday where students will rotate from each first grade classroom for Health, Social Studies, Science and Literacy activities. First Grade teachers will hold a curriculum night early in the year for parents to learn more about each of these areas!

RTI Small Groups!
Throughout the school year your child will be assessed by our team of Educational Assistants in the areas of Literacy and Math skills. These assessments assess specific areas that students may need extra help with based upon the skills assessed each time. Parents will be contacted if their child should qualify in either area. Please not that students may fluctuate in and out of these groups as the year progresses.
